Red-eye is caused when the flash is too close to the lens, and with the D, the flash is nowhere near the lens. If you find yourself taking a lot of indoor shots where flash is required, you won't have to spend a lot of time after the fact editing out the red-eye from your digital photos.
It's a good lens if you are getting started in photography, and just want to get the camera and lens all at once so you can start snapping away. It works well for portraits and landscapes, since it has a nice wide angle setting at 18mm and is optimized to work with the D's smaller sensor.
